Jamaica Mission Trip 2010

Pictured above are fifteen students from Holy Cross and Regiopolis-Notre Dame high schools here in Kingston , and their adult supervisors who are busily preparing for their upcoming Mission Trip to Kingston , Jamaica .  

Anne Heemskerk, Youth Coordinator for our Archdiocese, will be accompanying the group who will be volunteering at various worksites under the sponsorship of St. Patrick’s Foundation.  They will also be joined in Jamaica by His Grace, Archbishop O’Brien, and members of our Twinning Committee, for the signing of an historic Twinning Agreement between our two Archdioceses. The group has finished their fundraising and are now collecting school and medical supplies to take with them.

A new MULTI-FAITH CENTRE at Hotel Dieu Hospital has opened its doors to members of all faiths or none who are looking for a quiet place to pray, meditate or reflect.  At a dedication ceremony on January 26, members of the hospital’s multi-faith advisory committee were invited to light a candle and offer a blessing on behalf of their faith tradition or denomination.

During the fall, Coles Books in the Cornwall Square Mall adopted St. Columban’s.  They asked customers if they wanted to donate $2 each to St. Columban’s to be put towards the purchase of books.  During the campaign they raised just over $1,000.  
In this picture in the rear (l to r) are Andrea Major, Manager Coles Books, David Kennedy, Principal St. Columban’s Catholic School, Jane Beehler and Virginia Winn, librarians for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.
 In the front are Shaelynn Mullin and Bailey Julien, students at St. Columban’s.

Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario Director of Education, Wm. J. Gartland, is joined by The Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ottawa, CDSBEO Vice-Chair Nancy Kirby (Lanark County Trustee), and Chairperson Ronald Eamer (City of Cornwall and Glengarry County Trustee) following their acclamation at the CDSBEO’s Inaugural Meeting held December 1^st.

Five Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul celebrated Jubilee Anniversaries on 12 & 13 June at Providence Motherhouse.   Archbishop Brendan O’Brien presided at the Eucharistic celebration held at the Chapel of Mary, Mother of Compassion.

March for Life '09

Over 10,000 people gathered on Parliament Hill on Thursday, March 14th for the annual March for Life.

Archbishop Brendan O'Brien joined the Holy Cross and Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School groups for a picture on Parliament Hill after the March.

Students and staff from high schools across the Algonquin & Lakeshore C.D.S.B. attended, including a busload of students, staff and parents from Holy Cross and Regiopolis-Notre Dame C.H.S. who travelled up to Ottawa together to join politicians, bishops, priests, religious and laity from across Canada as they spoke out against abortion.  The Kingston group first attended a pro-life Mass at St. Patrick's Basilica and then walked up to Parliament Hill for the Rally and the March for Life that followed.   At the Rally they heard speeches from people of all ages who passionately defended the sanctify of all life from conception to natural death.    Archbishop Brendan O'Brien and many priests from the Archdiocese of Kingston joined in the March which snaked through downtown Ottawa for hours in the pouring rain. Congratulations to all those students and staff from our Board who attended this amazing event and to those individuals and groups whose donations made this trip possible.
