Ministry to the Deaf in the Archdiocese is a far-reaching program that includes the entire family hearing, hard of hearing, deafened and deaf.

Pastoral and social service to this linguistic minority is provided through two trained Pastoral Care workers Norma LaCroix and Alanna McDonald. Their work is dedicated to the preservation of Deaf Catholic Culture within the Catholic Community. Their work also takes them outside this community to meet the needs on an ecumenical basis when invited to do so.

Ministry with the Deaf provides the following services throughout the Archdiocese:

Assistance and Support With those:

in hopes of developing their Prayer Life
in need of Sacramental Preparation
who are grieving in times of illness and death
who are unemployed
who are elderly and in need of care
who are separated and divorced
single-parent families in need of extra support
struggling with finances
suffering from addictions
in need of improving parenting skills
who are lonely in need of a visit

who are in prison

Advocacy
An ‘advocate’ or ‘support person’ means that the pastoral care worker goes with the deaf person as a support to an appointment to ensure that their rights are protected and that the information being presented is clearly understood e.g. Medical, legal, financial terminology. The advocate may also spend time with the person after the appointment to make sure the information was clearly understood.

Eucharistic Minister
The Pastoral Care worker can bring the Eucharist to the sick and shut-ins in their homes, the hospitals and nursing homes.

Religious Education

Sacramental Preparation
Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Marriage Preparation, RCIA (a program for those interested in becoming Catholic or those who want more information about the Church and its teachings)  This can be set up for groups or individuals upon requests.

Seniors
The Pastoral Care worker visits seniors in their homes, retirement homes, nursing homes. A seniors gathering/luncheon is also provided at Christmas and in the spring.
