Social Justice Documents

Mission Statement

We, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston and the Anglican Diocese of Ontario, united by the Holy Spirit in our common commitment to the social imperatives of the Gospel, promote the understanding and practice of Christian social teaching, as we work and pray for the coming of the Kingdom.

We’re Getting an Education

The members of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of Kingston are spending the first half hour of their monthly meetings in reflection and discussion of Caritas in Veritate. They are using the action study guide to accompany the encyclical. This guide is available for order from the CCCB website or to download from

Who we are:

The Justice & Peace Commission of the Archdiocese of Kingston was established in 1987 with the approval of Archbishop Francis Spence, through the efforts of Catherine Perkins, Rev. William Burns, Rev. Patrick Kelly and Rev. Lloyd Cummings. The inaugural meeting was held on November 17, 1987.

Since its inception, the Commission has enjoyed the leadership and commitment of outstanding men and women. Chief among its leaders was John Gomes, Coordinator of the Archdiocesan Justice & Peace Office, who facilitated the work of the Commission until his retirement in December, 2003. The Archdiocese and the Commission appreciated his profound knowledge and love of the Social Imperatives of the Gospels and his faith-driven commitment to their application.

In the early 1990s, Gomes was instrumental in obtaining the approval of the Catholic Archbishop and the Anglican Bishop to have representatives from the Anglican Church sit on the Catholic Archdiocesan Commission.  After several years of working together, the relationship of the two faiths became more formalized when Bishop Bruce, Anglican Diocese of Ontario, agreed to become an ex officio member of the Commission in 2003. Formal recognition of the relationship of the two faiths on the Commission was confirmed in 2005, when Archbishop Meagher , Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston and Bishop Bruce, Anglican Diocese of Ontario accepted the adoption of the Mission Statement of the Justice & Peace Commission. (See above, Mission Statement)

The Commission submits an Annual Report to both the Roman Catholic and the Anglican Diocesan Administrations.  The Chair also attends and reports at all meetings of the Adult Education Committee of the Archdiocese. Communications to the Parishes, to the Media, to Politicians, and to Social Interest Groups, are submitted to both Chancery Offices before publication.

The Commission is guided in its work by a set of Guidelines approved by the Archbishop and by the Commission. The Program for each coming year is formulated in December and prioritized and refined the following January. This Program then acts as a guide for the Commission’s work throughout the year, but does not exclude issues arising that are unforeseen during the year. The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Archdiocesan Centre.

See the Guidelines and Annual Reports for further details of the Commission’s Program.

Right now, the Horn of Africa is experiencing the worst drought in the region in 60 years and the situation is dire. An estimated 10.7 million people are in need of food, water and urgent medical care and Somalia is on the brink of famine.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE has long stood in solidarity with the people in the Horn of Africa, providing aid during the famine in Ethiopia in 1984 and continuing to support the population in addressing the constant struggle to overcome hunger.

Once again, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE is ready to show its solidarity, but we need your help.

Please help us support our Caritas partners in the region who are working tirelessly to bring urgent aid to those who need it most.

POVERTY IN CANADA

In early Dec. UNICEF released a report entitled The Children Left Behind.

The findings reveal that Canada placed 17th among 24 industrialized countries in terms of the material well-being enjoyed by its poorest children, ninth in terms of their health and third in education. Recently Campaign 2000, a coalition of anti-poverty and faith-based organizations released its annual report card and showed that Canada has made little progress addressing child poverty over the last 20 years. Almost 1 in 10 children live in poverty in Canada .  Now, after three years of study, there is a report that has been put forward by an all party committee of parliament called Federal Poverty Reduction Plan: Working in Partnership Towards Reducing Poverty in Canada . The report supports the key goals of the Dignity for All Campaign. There is at present a ground swell of organizations asking our governments to turn attention to this issue and develop a strategy that will be effective in eliminating poverty in Canada . Development Peace – Education and Action

After a successful workshop on the current education campaign - Water for all, Let Justice Flow, D & P members are planning to conduct the campaign in parishes throughout the diocese. To get involved in your parish or to form a group contact Colleen justice@romancatholic.kingston.on.ca

A Generous Response to Desperate Need

Development and Peace would like to thank all of its donors for contributing $3 million to the organization to bring humanitarian aid to flood-victims in Pakistan . Heavy rains caused major flooding in the country throughout July and August, affecting over 20 million people. Although this disaster was slow to gain attention, Development and Peace knew it could count on the generosity of its supporters, who have always shown great compassion for those living through a crisis situation.

Development and Peace is now supporting for a cholera-prevention campaign in Haiti . The organization is sending $123,000 to Caritas Haiti for this program, which is working with 3,000 families currently living in internally displaced people (IDP) camps in Port-au-Prince , the capital. Volunteers supervised by Caritas Haiti ’s medical team will distribute 3,000 hygiene kits (towels, buckets, soap, diapers, etc.). They will also hand out information leaflets and organize awareness-raising sessions. Water-purification tablets will be distributed in various camps, including those of Tabarre, Canapé Vert and Carrefour-Feuille. The program will last three months.

The Closing of Prison Farms

This campaign is far from over.  Supporters were encouraged by all those who came from all over the diocese and as far as Ottawa to take part in protests. Also, both the federal Liberal and NDP have stated that they will re-establish the prison farm program if elected. Just Dec.1st the opposition parties were successful in bringing the closure of the prison farm program to a three hour debate in the House of Commons. The text of the debate is at the link below. When you go the link, click on "routine proceedings" and scroll down to the second category "Committees of the House", then scroll down to the sixth committee listed, Public Safety and National Security.  The debate begins with a statement from Mark Holland, Public Safety critic for the Liberals, and a supporter of the Save Our Prison Farms campaign.

We hope the Conservatives will listen and change this policy decision which so many Canadians oppose.Want to Get involved? - Join the Monday night vigils
The vigil group continues to meet Monday evenings, 7 to 8 pm at the entrance to Frontenac Institution.  Join them if you can, to remind the community and CSC that the campaign isn't over, and to show support for the farm staff and the inmates who used to work at the farm.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

On behalf of the Committee on Human Trafficking of the Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission, we enclose a copy of the Education Package which we have developed over the past year to assist parishes to educate parishioners on Human Trafficking.

Letter from Archbishop O'Brien on Human Trafficking - Read more

Human Trafficking Information Sheet -Read more

How to Identify a Victim of Human Trafficking - Read more

While human trafficking is an all too prevalent activity right here in our own cities, there is an amazing lack of knowledge about it.  There are some groups and individuals who are working to address this gap but until more people are aware of what is happening, we will not be able to effectively combat it.

We invite you to pass this Education Package on to the most appropriate person or committee, who would take responsibility for getting this information to parishioners.

Some suggestions on how to use the Education Package are:

Photocopy and pass it out as a complete package appended to your weekly bulletin

Leave copies where people can pick them up at church entrances

Use the enclosed bulletin inserts in your bulletin over a period of weeks

Have members of the Committee on Human Trafficking come to your parish to give a short presentation.

If you are interested in having one of our committee members come and speak on this issue, please contact Rev. Brad Smith at telephone:  (613) 396-3797 or
email: bsmith@ontario.anglican.ca
